Batman Forever Intervals

I read in Triathlete Magazine an article about a one-hour indoor trainer interval cycling workout called Batman Forever.  Neal Henderson of APEX Coaching who created it named it that because the big interval looks like Batmans’ head.  To read the article click here>>

I recreated it in Rouvy. If you use Rouvy, click here>> to use the workout yourself.  The first time I only made it halfway through.  I think the fail was two-fold.  First, I didn’t prepare myself nutritionally in advance.  I just kind of hopped on and tried it out.  Those long intervals ended up burning a lot of fuel.  Second, since I have never tried interval training before, I don’t think I was mentally prepared for the duration of this ride which for me was about an hour.  I thought it would have been done faster.

Since then I have crushed it twice.  I made sure to have some Clif Bloks with me and a full water bottle to keep the legs going.  Additionally, four Van Halen albums of guitar and drum pounding tunes set on shuffle was a great motivation to help me keep driving to the end as well.

After trying an interval training ride for the first time, I now understand why this is so beneficial.  You just don’t get that kind of precise, non-stop kind of riding out in the real world on the pavement.  Constant high intensity riding for an hour is a great workout and seems to build up incredible stamina quickly.
