70.3 Ironman Indian Wells Race Day

Cold, cold start to the swim this morning. I think they said 57 degree water temp. I thank more experienced people at check in that told me to wear booties and pour warm water down my wetsuit before I get in. Worked great! Only my hands were significantly cold during the swim.

Loved the flat bike course, but it took probably 20 miles to warm up after being iced down during the swim. It was a PR time for 70.3 even though I had to stop and pee at least 6 times. At least I knew that I wasn’t getting dehydrated.

My run was my best yet and almost got through the whole thing without cramping for the first time. Then came the last mile and all of a sudden…twang! Big cramp right in the back of the left leg. Disappointing, but I stayed positive that it was the farthest I have ever gone in a triathlon before the cramps set in. Downed a Hotshot, almost burped it up, asked a kid to share his water to wash it down, walked it off, and then ran the last half mile in.

Almost a 70.3 PR, but missed it by 3 minutes. Still, happy with my performance given I had a small shoulder injury about a week ago limiting me on my swim and the first transition was a bit challenging given how much gear had to come off and get packed up before off to the bike. Mostly, my run was so much better which is what I was really trying to improve.
