The birthday boy got to try out his new toy today. There is almost nothing the Fenix 3 HR can’t track.
It has sensors on the back to track my heart rate. It can track my sleep. GPS stats on running, cycling, and swimming. Swim strokes and laps. It can show me texts that just got sent to my phone. The list goes on and on.
Plus, all of this data gets uploaded to my own Garmin Connect site so I can look at all the results over time. I can set goals, connect with other friends/groups, and probably more things that I will discover over time.
Last night I wore it to bed and tracked my sleep. If you look at the graph below, each of the blue spikes is likely each time my cat Max jumped up and wanted to be petted. It got so bad last night I had to throw him out and lock the door. I had suspected the furry creature was not adding anything positive to my training efforts and now I have the proof!

This afternoon I took it out on the inaugural run. I have not run in weeks unfortunately, so today I decided to keep it simple and just do a few miles. It was buzzing on an off the whole time showing me all kinds of stats during the run that were difficult to see with my advanced age eyes. I will have to look up what it was showing me and why. I will also need to see if I can alter the text size, and what the watch is showing, while I run so I can read it and understand what it is reporting.
The good news is that it was a nice run and I felt good about it. There remains the need for speed, but we have plenty of months ahead of us for that and no lack of stats like the ones below that should help me get there.
